Wireless Remote Control Operation Manual for
30 Ton & 50 Ton RTG Crane - Mexico Project

Introduction

Operating a Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane with a wireless remote controller can be smooth and safe if you know the right steps. This guide is designed for the 30-ton and 50-ton RTG cranes we supplied for a project in Mexico. These cranes have been customized to suit the working environment and loading requirements of the site, so the procedures here match exactly how this equipment works.

The aim is simple: give operators clear, step-by-step instructions they can follow every day without second guessing. Whether you are new to RTG cranes or have years of experience, having a written reference helps reduce mistakes, prevent downtime, and keep everyone safe on site.

Purpose of This Guide

The goal here is not just to explain which button does what. It's to make sure you understand:

  • How to start and stop the crane safely.
  • When and how to use the tyre steering modes.
  • The meaning of the angles (0°, 45°, 90°) and what each is for.
  • Best practices to avoid damage or unnecessary wear.

This is not theory — it's based on how the actual Mexico project cranes are built and programmed.

RTG Crane Model

Control System

Each crane is fitted with an industrial wireless remote controller that can handle:

  • Hoisting and lowering
  • Trolley movement (left/right)
  • Gantry travel
  • Tyre steering rotation
  • Emergency stop

The remote uses photoelectric limit switches to stop tyre rotation exactly at set positions. This means no over-rotating or guessing when to stop — the crane takes care of that automatically once you hold the right button.

Special Note: Tyre Steering

This crane's tyre steering mechanism is only for no-load condition. That's not just a manufacturer's suggestion — it's a hard rule to protect the tyres, steering motors, and limit switches. Turning the tyres with a container in the spreader puts too much stress on the system. Always:

  • Unload before changing tyre direction.
  • Check that the tyres are free of obstructions before rotation.
  • Use the correct button combination for the target angle.

Safety Precautions

Safety is not just a checklist — it's the habit that keeps both people and equipment in good shape. An RTG crane, especially a 30-ton or 50-ton unit, can move massive loads with ease, but that power needs control. Here are the practical rules you should follow every single time you pick up the remote.

Operate Only by Trained Personnel

An RTG crane is not a "learn as you go" machine.

  • Make sure the operator has completed proper training on this specific crane model.
  • Understand the remote control layout before starting work.
  • Review the yard's lifting plan before each shift.

Respect the Rated Capacity

Your crane is rated for 30 tons or 50 tons depending on the model.

  • Never exceed this weight — even by "just a little."
  • Remember: the load includes any lifting gear (slings, spreader, hooks).
  • Overloading can damage motors, tyres, and the crane structure.

Keep the Work Area Clear

A clear yard is a safe yard.

  • No one should stand under or near a suspended load.
  • Remove any loose materials from the travel path.
  • Check for parked vehicles, tools, or containers that may block gantry travel.

Maintain Line-of-Sight

When operating with the remote, you are the eyes of the crane.

  • Stand where you can see both the crane and the load.
  • Avoid blind spots — reposition yourself if needed.
  • Never operate from inside a vehicle or behind stacked containers.

Use the Emergency Stop Without Delay

If something looks wrong, don't wait.

  • Press the red emergency stop immediately if a person, vehicle, or object is at risk.
  • The crane will cut power to all movements until the stop is reset.
  • Report the incident to the supervisor before restarting.

Note

Note: This operation guide is provided for your reference only. For specific operational needs, please contact us or your original crane supplier for accurate, model-specific instructions.

Tyre Steering Mechanism Operation

Understanding the tyre steering angles helps you move the crane in the right direction safely. The crane can rotate its tyres to these three key positions:

  • Longitudinal (0°) — tyres point straight along the yard lane.
  • Circle-Turning Mode (45°) — tyres angled for smooth turning in tight spaces.
  • Transverse (90°) — tyres positioned sideways for cross-lane movement.

From Longitudinal (0°) to Circle-Turning (45°)

  • Press and hold Button 2.
  • The tyres will rotate until the 45° limit switch stops the movement.
  • Release Button 2 once rotation stops.

From Transverse (90°) to Circle-Turning (45°)

  • Press and hold Button 2 again.
  • Wait until the tyres reach 45°, confirmed by the limit switch.
  • Release Button 2 when the rotation stops.

From Longitudinal (0°) to Transverse (90°)

  • Press and hold Button 3.
  • Tyres rotate until the 90° limit switch signals stop.
  • Release Button 3 after stopping.

From Transverse (90°) to Longitudinal (0°)

  • Press and hold Button 1.
  • Tyres will turn back to 0°, stopping automatically.
  • Release Button 1 when finished.
  • From Circle-Turning (45°) to Longitudinal (0°)

    • First, hold down Button 2.
    • While holding Button 2, press and hold Button 1.
    • Wait for the tyres to rotate to 0°.
    • Release both buttons when rotation stops.

    From Circle-Turning (45°) to Transverse (90°)

    • Hold Button 2.
    • While holding Button 2, press and hold Button 3.
    • Tyres rotate to 90°.
    • Release both buttons after the stop.

This step-by-step method helps keep tyre rotation precise and prevents damage caused by over-rotating. Always make sure the crane is unloaded before steering the tyres.

    Hoisting Mechanism Operation

Controlling the hoist smoothly is crucial for safe lifting and lowering of loads. Here's how to handle it with the remote:

    Lift Load (Up)

    • Press and hold the ↑ (Up Arrow) button on the remote.
    • The hoist will raise the load steadily as long as you hold the button.

    Lower Load (Down)

    • Press and hold the ↓ (Down Arrow) button on the remote.
    • The hoist will gently lower the load while the button is pressed.

    Important Note

    • Always make sure the hook is directly above the load's center before you start lifting.
    • This prevents the load from swinging or slipping, which keeps everyone safe and protects the equipment.

Smooth and careful control will keep your lifts steady and avoid unnecessary strain on the crane.

    Trolley Mechanism Operation

Moving the trolley smoothly helps position the load exactly where you need it. Here's the basic remote control guide:

    • Move Left: Press and hold the ← (Left Arrow) button on the remote to move the trolley left.
    • Move Right:Press and hold the → (Right Arrow) button on the remote to move the trolley right.
    • Important Note :Avoid overloading when moving the trolley to prevent mechanical strain or accidents.

    Emergency Operations

Quick response during emergencies keeps everyone safe and protects the crane.

    Emergency Stop

    • Press the red emergency stop button on either the remote or the crane's control panel.
    • This immediately stops all crane movements.

    Signal Loss

    • If the remote signal is lost, the crane will automatically stop as a safety measure.
    • Do not resume operation until the connection is fully restored and confirmed stable.

Maintenance & Battery Care for Remote

Taking care of your remote controller ensures it works reliably every day.

Battery Charging:Charge the remote's battery every day after use to avoid unexpected shutdowns.

Keep It Clean and Dry:Avoid exposing the remote to water, oil, or grease — this can damage buttons and electronics.

    Button Inspection

    • Before starting each shift, test all buttons to make sure they respond correctly.
    • Report any faults immediately to avoid operational risks.

Keeping these maintenance habits will help your remote last longer and keep your crane running smoothly.

Operating Tips for Mexican Port & Yard Conditions

Working in busy port yards like those in Mexico means dealing with tight spaces, changing weather, and lots of activity. Here are some practical tips to keep your crane running smoothly and safely in these conditions.

Avoid High-Speed Travel in Narrow Yard Lanes

    • Slow down when moving the crane through tight or crowded lanes.
    • This helps prevent collisions and gives you more control over the load and crane movement.

Use Circle-Turning Mode for Tight Corners

    • When maneuvering around stacked containers or confined spaces, switch to the 45° circle-turning tyre position.
    • This angle lets the crane turn more smoothly without needing extra room.

Reduce Hoisting Speed During High Winds

    • Strong winds can make the load swing dangerously.
    • Slow down your lifting and lowering speed to keep the load steady and prevent accidents.
